Campaign promotes cancer awareness and improvement in cancer care amongst patients, healthcare professionals and the public
Kajang, March 13, 2019 – More than 90 cancer patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and members of the
public congregated at a golf resort here recently to attend the annual Lavender Ribbon Campaign and renew their pledge in fighting against cancer, whilst getting first-hand information on the latest medication and ways to prevent and reduce the risk of the disease.
Held in collaboration with the National Cancer Society Malaysia (“NCSM”), the Lavender Ribbon campaign was initiated by Duopharma Biotech Berhad (“Duopharma Biotech”) in 2016 with the objective of creating awareness of cancer, focusing on cancer prevention, risk reduction and early detection whilst reaching out to the public more effectively and successfully.
Speaking at the event, Leonard Ariff Abdul Shatar, Group Managing Director of Duopharma Biotech, said that this year’s theme of ‘I Am A Survivor’ is apt at promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst the cancer survivors besides educating the caregivers and members of the public on understanding their painful experiences and how they can help the patients cope with their illness.
“Duopharma Biotech is not just looking at combating the disease, but also to pursue early intervention, detection and timely treatment which could greatly reduce the need for more expensive treatments and also ensure a higher rate of survival.
“Treatments for cancer are very costly for the patients and will adversely impact the families, as well as the Government’s healthcare budget. According to a study by ASEAN Costs in Oncology or ACTION for short, 51 per cent of Malaysian cancer patients will face financial trouble within the first year of treatment. Unless measurable steps are taken now to prevent non-communicable diseases like cancer, Malaysia will be in dire straits and burdened with high healthcare expenses in the next decade,” he added.
During the event, Leonard Ariff presented a mock cheque amounting of RM10,000.00 to NCSM for Duopharma Biotech’s sponsorship. The mock cheque was received by Mr. Sudhaharan Nair, General Manager of NCSM on behalf of the society.
Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim bin A. Wahid, Medical Director and Consultant Clinical Oncologist of Beacon International Specialist Centre was present during the event to deliver an educational talk on cancer. This was followed by a two-hour Lavender Ribbon Campaign Treasure Hunt where participants were required to find clues at various stations before answering or solving answers related to cancer.
